The “Knock on wood” article in the Home Guide (Sept. 18) features a picture of the devastation from the famous Mount St. Helens eruption with the caption that “much of the Pacific Northwest has been logged to capacity. . . .”
The copy also contains a statement that 90 percent of the trees in the Pacific Northwest have been logged and cutting on federal lands has been halted.
As someone who works in the forest products industry, I must point out that this article’s fraudulent use of the picture and exaggerated claims as to what is happening in the nation’s forests is a disservice to us in the industry, as well as to the consumer.
If you really believe that so many trees are gone, as the author states, perhaps the Tribune should urge its readers to save trees by not buying newspapers and switching to a more environmentally friendly, electronic media.
