The article by Doug Cassel, “It’s too soon to place El Salvador in the UN’s success column” (Oct. 13), was timely. For more than 10 years we spent more than $1 million per day on military solutions. Now the “elections of the century” are scheduled and we are unwilling to ensure that everyone who wants to vote is registered-more than 30 percent of the eligible voters are not registered.
Were we ever really interested in a democratic process? Or did we simply want to stop a revolt of the poor and oppressed? In August, Clinton sent 450 American troops to El Salvador. Why? El Salvador doesn’t need more armed forces; it needs registrars and a fair election process.
