At Fiddler’s Green in Naperville, “what we’re trying to do is come as close to creating an authentic Irish pub as possible,” said owner Jim Costa.
In Ireland, Costa explained, the pub is a family affair with moderately priced food in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. It’s a casual place where folks can stop in to read the paper if they like, he said.
With Guinness Stout (plus several other imported brews) on tap, regulation dart boards (bring your own darts) and “the best corned beef in Naperville-no brisket, only beef round,” Fiddler’s Green seems to be on the right track.
Fiddler’s Green presents “a limited but hearty menu,” according to Costa, who is using the best recipes he can find for each of the pub’s food selections. Besides the obligatory Irish stew, he offers sandwich selections that include a half-pound hamburger, corned beef, reuben and Malibu chicken. Children’s items include peanut-butter-and-jelly and grilled-cheese sandwiches. The most expensive menu item is $6.20.
The food (except the stew) is made as it is ordered. “It may take a little longer, but it’s worth the wait,” Costa said.
Fiddler’s Green’s Irish-ized version of nachos starts with medallions of deep-fried potato in place of taco chips. All other toppings are consistent with the traditional appetizer, according to Costa.
Costa’s main goal is to have fun right along with the customers. “I know I won’t get rich in the short run. My quality and quantities are too high,” he said. But he’s hoping the Wednesday night dart tournaments, the Saturday night entertainment (alternating between Irish groups and current pop) and the family appeal (during the summer it’s a popular spot with Little Leaguers and their families) will assure a long run.
