The new name for Burger King Academy, an alternative school for freshmen high school dropouts, is Aurora Cities in Schools Corporate Academy.
Although the fast-food franchise is the primary sponsor, there are several other large sponsors for the academy, said Denise Hayworth, director of Cities in School/Aurora 2000, the non-profit organization sponsoring the academy.
“Quite a few alternative schools that are sponsored by Burger King throughout the country are called Burger King Academies,” Hayworth said, “but we wanted to reflect the fact that we are not looking for sponsorship just from Burger King but wanted to open it up to other businesses too.”
The new name has a more prestigious ring to it, Hayworth said.
The academy plans to open Jan. 3 in the renovated Barber Greene factory on Highland Avenue.
