The crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii), named for its needlelike spines protruding from grooved stems, produces either red, yellow or salmon-colored flowers when grown in an intensely lighted environment.

During periods of low light in winter, the crown of thorns rests and should be watered sparingly. Dropping leaves indicate the plant is starting to rest. New leaf buds form with the return of higher light conditions, and water can be given more frequently.
