There hasn’t been a president like Bill Clinton in a long time. He works flat out for the best interests of the nation. He is a truly remarkable man.

People accuse him of deal-making to get NAFTA passed, ignoring the fact that that is what all great presidents have always done. They must because the American system of divided government weakens the president in domestic affairs compared with his counterparts in parliamentary governments.

And what a refreshing change to see a president encouraging the opposition to support legislation in the national interest. As if partisanship and gridlock solved problems.

It is interesting to note how many representatives, in recent announcements of where they stood, found it necessary to stress their districts’ interests. But anyone who understands free trade knows that it is in its very nature for there to be regional dislocations so that the nation as a whole can gain.

And where are all those pundits who said the debate with Mr. Perot was a tactical mistake? Perot was revealed for the inconsistent opportunist he is. That, too, is a gain for the country.
