I am writing to express my appreciation for Mike Royko’s Nov. 10 column, “There ought to be a law making Veterans Day a day for vets.” As the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, I am often dismayed when our members work hard to put on a meaningful Veterans Day event, only to find that many veterans cannot get off work to attend.
I am a Chicago-area native and always enjoy Royko’s perspectives. Although his approach to Veterans Day is in a humorous vein, his point is well-taken. Veterans Day was created to honor America’s veterans. They, more than any other segment of society, have paid the highest price for the freedoms we enjoy today.
