Is your KidNews section a special addition to inform and educate kids or is it MTV in print? In essence, it encourages rabid consumption of junk culture instead of being intelligently critical of it. It is also ambivalent about moral questions regarding certain groups. While KidNews would simply have condemned neo-Nazis and the KKK, it weakly and smugly asks whether “gangsta rap” is bad.

KidNews can be a vehicle in introducing kids to political and social issues. Instead, merely to boost Tribune sales, it is a kiddie version of Vogue, Rolling Stone and the National Enquirer rolled into one. Candy causes cavities in kids’ teeth and KidNews causes them in kids’ heads.
