Eleventh-ranked Washington opened the second half with a bang and never looked back en route to a 56-40 victory over Regina Dominican at the St. Ignatius Tournament Monday afternoon.

Entering the third quarter with a 25-11 lead, Washington (8-4) scored the first 11 points of the second half behind seven of Tangela Smith’s game-high 18.

Smith, a 6-foot-3-inch senior, added 18 rebounds and 11 blocks, while sophomore Sherry Oliphant and freshamn Josie Cole added 16 and 10 points, respectively.

“They had not picked up a ball since Thursday, so I knew they would come out sluggish,” said Washington coach Willie Byrd.

No. 4 St. Ignatius (9-1) topped Deerfield 64-44. Katie Guinane led the charge with 16 points, while Megan Basil added 13.

Shelby Elsner finished wth 20 points and Jennifer Walsh added 12 points and 10 rebounds as Queen of Peace (9-3) rolled by Robeson 68-26.

Dundee-Crown: No. 13 Mother McAuley (8-3) trailed Lockport 13-12 after one quarter, but used fullcourt pressure to register a 84-33 victory. Karen Valentas’ 12 points led three players in double figures and McAuley forced 23 turnovers. . . . No. 14 Buffalo Grove (10-2) advanced with a 67-42 victory over Dundee-Crown behind sophomore Cherise Compobasso’s career-high 33 points, 22 of which came in the first half. Dundee-Crown was paced by Karly Kaschub’s 24.

Hillcrest: Julie McGill led Sandburg’s 46-16 victory over Tinley Park with 12 points. . . . Krista Peterson’s 11 points helped Stagg drop Thornton 46-37 despite 26 points and 15 rebounds from Christina Berry.. . . Rich South (8-2) prevailed over St. Francis de Sales 51-17 as Lenetta Bentley finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. . . . Alesia Doszak’s free throw with time expired sealed a Rich Central 42-41 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor. Kenyetta Bronson led Rich Central with 10 points, while Homewood-Flossmooor was paced by Lori Valente’s 15.

Ridgewood: Univesity High held off Taft 41-34 as Clarissa Booth netted 23 points.
