Most children won’t ever face the situation Kevin McAllister, played by Macauley Culkin, encountered in the film “Home Alone.” But kids do find themselves alone at home at times. Sometimes it’s because of their parents’ working hours; sometimes it’s because the kids feel that they’re too old for baby-sitters.

With that in mind, Sherman Hospital in Elgin will conduct a “Home Alone” seminar this week for children 9 through 12.

“We try to instill in them that being alone at home is a responsibility, and also that they shouldn’t be afraid when they’re alone,” said Donna Starrenburg, a wellness educator at the hospital.

In the hourlong class taught by a Red Cross instructor, children learn how to use the telephone properly, how to deal with someone who comes to the door, and first-aid skills.

Class members are given a workbook that contains information they can share with parents, Starrenburg said. Parents and children then can adapt the information as they see fit. Certificates are awarded after completion of the class.

Classes are held at the hospital four or five times a year, with each session limited to 20. The next class will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sherman Hospital, 934 Center St., Elgin. Cost: $5. Registration is required. 800-397-9000.
