Regarding Jimmy Gurule’s article, “Legalized drugs: No cure for crime” (Op Ed, Jan. 24), it is regrettable when a law professor chooses to ignore a fundamental principle of individual liberty.
Whatever a consenting adult freely and privately chooses to imbibe, ingest, inject or inhale is not the business of government at any level, nor is it the business of Gurule’s, beyond that of moral suasion.
Why not treat drug abuse as a social problem? While all the social engineers are working toward voluntary solutions, let us remove the need for the addicts to engage in everything from shoplifting to strong-armed robbery by allowing them to go to their neighborhood pharmacy, at their own expense and for one-fiftieth of the cost.
Gurule is correct on this: Drug abuse is morally wrong. However, it must be allowed to be what it is, a private act of immorality.
