Robert Golonak Hayes, 78, former assistant Cook County superintendent of schools, died Friday in La Grange Memorial Hospital of a heart condition. Mr. Hayes, of Indian Head Park, was assistant county superintendent from 1949 until his retirement in 1980. Early in his career Mr. Hayes was a teacher at Justice Park Elementary School. He received an Army commendation from the secretary of war for being instrumental in organizing GI Schools in the Philippines, Korea and Japan. He is survived by two sisters. Services will be held at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in Central Funeral Chapel, 6158 S. Central Ave., Chicago. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Symphorosa Catholic Church, 6200 S. Austin Ave., Chicago.
