After seeing the movie “Philadelphia,” it seems Hollywood is trying to compensate for its fast lane reputation by practicing “safe cinema.” Can sympathy only be felt for those who most closely resemble middle America?

What if the Tom Hanks character in the film had a limited education, was unemployed and came from a family that did not support him when he contracted the AIDS virus? Would this film still have the same box office draw?
