Gary Del Re, a former police commander of Buffalo Grove, was sworn in as the new undersheriff of Lake County in a brief ceremony Monday before County Clerk Linda Hess.

Del Re replaces Willie Smith, who asked to be relieved of his duties. Smith and Sheriff Clinton Grinnell were among those at Monday’s ceremony.

As undersheriff, Del Re will be responsible for the daily operation of the Lake County sheriff’s office and will be commander of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. He spent 21 years in the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Smith said he will help Del Re in the transition, then will assume the rank of captain and take on other duties in the sheriff’s office.
