The recent cheating scandal at the Naval Academy has caused many naval officers to express shock that midshipmen would lie. I am not at all surprised.

Lying is now an official policy of the Department of Defense. Gay service persons are required by “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” to lie about who they are. That is the policy: “Don’t tell.”

The Tailhook scandal showed that servicemen did not respect their female counterparts. They were just following the lead of their superiors who also did not respect women in the service. Until “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” is done away with and the Pentagon truly values honesty, we will continue to see cheating scandals and worse forms of dishonesty in the military.
