I hope the Tribune doesn’t let the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story overshadow or nearly crowd out the upcoming Lillehammer Winter Olympics. The Olympics itself deserves the media’s full attention and there’s more, of course, than figure skating-including luge, ski jumping, racing and the biathlon.

The “Court TV” channel will carry the Harding-Kerrigan situation. Undoubtedly, so will Geraldo, Sally and Oprah, as will the National Enquirer.

My feeling is that the Harding-Kerrigan case is more of a criminal matter than a true sports story. And the Olympians-who’ve worked their ever lovin’ cabooses off for years-deserve coverage by the print and electronic media. Crowding out however much of the Olympics with this largely sideshow story would be as much of an injustice as was Jimmy Carter’s keeping our athletes from competing in the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics.
