For long-lasting color, choose a matte (such as Poppy) or semi-matte lipstick, which will stay on better than a glossier lip color, says Sandy Linter, a makeup artist at the Stephen Knoll Salon in New York. (Linter’s recent clients have included actresses Sharon Stone, Winona Ryder and Uma Thurman.) Linter likes Estee Lauder’s Featherproof Lipstick.
Another key to long-lasting color is proper application. “Go over lips with a little concealer or foundation,” advises Maureen Burke, a makeup artist in Chicago who has done makeup for fashion shows, ads and commercials. “Next, outline lips with a lip pencil and then fill them in with the pencil. Using a lip brush, apply lipstick, then blot with a tissue. To set color, dust translucent powder lightly over lips. Finally, apply excess lipstick on the brush to lips to revive the color.”
Linter, on the other hand, swears by Alexandra de Markoff’s Undercover For Lips. “It’s a miracle,” she says. “You put it on your lips and let it dry for 30 seconds. Next outline your mouth with a lip pencil in a slightly deeper tone than your lipstick, then apply your lipstick with a lip brush. It will stay on until you eat or drink it off.”
A plus: Both methods will help lipstick keep its true color.
For a softer, less obvious line, Linter outlines the lips with a pencil, then uses a lip brush to push the liner out over the lip line, into the desired shape.
