Two years ago, having read yet one more newspaper article about children who have been mistreated in the most horrific ways, I decided that I had to do something.

My husband and I became foster parents and are helping to guide one of these children. Obviously, a foster child isn’t exactly like a birth child but certainly seems closer to a stepchild. Step-families abound with varying degrees of success; no one thinks much of this phenomenon. Why is it that there is still stigma attached in the area of foster care?

I look around in my community where families are proud to invite a foreign exchange student into their homes, and I wonder why there are no foster children. What does it take to prompt people like us to open our door to these children?
