Clarence Page (Jan. 26) chides the Anti-Defamation League for publicizing the hate-filled rantings of Nation of Islam spokesperson Khalid Abdul Muhammad. Page describes Muhammad’s speech at Kean College as a “local issue,” and advises the ADL to sponsor town meetings to discuss Muhammad’s remarks rather than running ads of its content in the New York Times.

Since when is hate a local issue? If the speaker were a Klan member and its content racist, can one imagine Page dismissing it as a local issue? And just what does Page expect to be discussed at a town meeting? Whether Jews are in fact “bloodsuckers” or own the Federal Reserve?

There is nothing to be discussed about Muhammad’s vitriol. It needs to be condemned by all and without equivocation.
