Albert Monroe Sharp, 53, a farmer in Hopkins Park, Ill., for the last eight years and a longtime civil rights activist, died at home Feb. 11. He was the former direct action chairman of the Chicago chapter of the Students Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He was a Freedom Rider in the South during the 1960s, delivered food to residents during the days of unrest on the West Side and was active in the political campaigns of the late Mayor Harold Washington, as well as political candidates in the 2nd and 3rd Wards. Survivors include his wife, Luvenia; five sons, Albert Jr., Byron, Michael, Christopher and Tawala; three daughters, Sarah, Susan and LaDondra; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial services for Mr. Sharp will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Liberty Baptist Church, 4849 S. King Drive.
