The problem of garbage pileups at some Chicago public schools was the result of harsh weather and an outmoded city trash collection system that soon will be replaced, city officials said Friday.

“The problem is solved already,” said Terry Levin, spokesman for the Department of Streets and Sanitation. “As of (Friday), all Chicago public schools are receiving regular pickup, which is once a week.”

Responding to complaints from several schools about the stench and eyesore caused by uncollected garbage, Levin said that broken garbage trucks have been repaired and extra manpower added to ensure that trash does not accumulate as the city prepares to implement a new system of trash pickup for schools.

Levin said the new system should be in place by the end of the month.

“It should not happen again. Bids have been put out and are back. We’re about to have a contract signing,” he said.
