I would like to applaud Stephen Chapman for hitting the nail right on the head in countering the arguments by the Far Right against equal rights for gay and lesbian citizens-“The real agenda in the campaign against gay rights” (Feb. 3).
The main focus of those opposed to the so-called “gay rights agenda” is family values and that, somehow, extending the same rights to gays that straights enjoy is eroding the base of the nuclear family. If family values and not plain hatred are the excuses for this fixation by the right (who like to claim we are only 1 percent of the population), why are they not attacking laws that permit divorce, unwed mothers or access to contraception for unmarried heterosexuals, since these issues would by far affect the vast majority of people and do more to address issues of the family than does the equal protection of gay people.
