To a person who has worked for civil rights for many years, it is exciting to have Deval Patrick, a very qualified strong advocate for equal rights, nominated to be the nation’s chief civil rights enforcer. For far too long the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has been less than enthusiastic about vigorously enforcing the rights of minorities and women.

Since Patrick undoubtedly would change that inaction, he will come under fire just as any strong nominee would. This post has been vacant for more than a year and needs to be filled by someone who understands what civil rights is all about. Let us get on with the business of our nation and cease dissension for the sake of dissension. As the Tribune correctly noted, “. . .A president deserves to have the appointees he needs to further his policies.”
