On Feb. 3, Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun was interviewed by National Public Radio regarding her reaction to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s pseudo-rejection of one of his representatives blatantly racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic diatribes.

Braun’s interviewer repeatedly queried in many different forms whether she repudiated, criticized or condemned the minister for such hatemongering. All she would do is condemn racism and hatred in general but would not specifically relate this to Farrakhan.

Such a reaction, or lack of one, is most disappointing from a woman who has been victimized by bigotry and intolerance. Surely, someone coming from such a background ought to be more sensitive to this type of situation.

As a self-proclaimed enemy of racists and hatemongers, Moseley-Braun’s lack of a strong and unqualified response in this matter is truly a disappointment.
