President Clinton recently promised Chicago $4 million to hire 50 new police officers. That breaks down to $80,000 per officer. In keeping with those numbers and the 100,000 new lawmen he has promised the nation, we are looking at a new expenditure of $8 billion per year.
Where are these new policemen going to incarcerate all the new felons they hope to apprehend? I thought there was a shortage of prison space. As long as $8 billion has miraculously appeared for crime control, why not instead use that money to build new prisons and let the existing police forces do their jobs and fill up the newly created vacancies?
