The balanced budget amendment could mean disaster for senior citizens who rely on Social Security and Medicare. Seniors want to see our nation get its fiscal house in order-but not through the balanced budget amendment.
Unlike the federal budget, the Social Security Trust Fund is on a sound financial footing. This year, it will show a $60 billion surplus. It doesn’t take a genius to see that many politicians have their hearts set on grabbing that surplus.
A recent study by the Families USA Foundation showed that this amendment would cost the average senior $1,081 in lost Social Security benefits in the first year alone.
America’s budget problems should not be shouldered primarily by its seniors. The so-called Balanced Budget Amendment must be defeated.
