A building engineer was accidentally killed while using a lathe that may have malfunctioned, officials said Sunday.
Robert Johnson, 48, of Elmhurst, who suffered cuts on his head, was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The accident occurred at 8:30 p.m. Saturday as Johnson was using a lathe to shape a metal bar at the store, 111 N. State St., police said.
Johnson was found by a co-worker lying on his back next to the lathe, Harrison Area Police Sgt. John Schillen said. Police said it appeared Johnson may have leaned over the lathe to check a problem with it when the accident occurred.
Field’s officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.
