Bob Greene’s column (June 22) was critical of Southwest Airlines’ procedures for making passenger-safety briefings. Mr. Greene thought that the humor sometimes found in the briefings indicated a lack of respect for safety regulations.
As a Southwest Airlines captain, the safety of my customers is my highest priority; that is why I support the livening up of our briefings. When the flight attendants make the announcements more entertaining, there is a better chance that the customers are paying attention and hearing the information that could be important.
Sometimes, lighthearted humor is the best way to make sure that my valued customers get the message of the safety briefings. In Bob Greene’s case, it worked; he was obviously listening.
