Since 1979, Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report has anonymously inspected thousands of upscale small resorts and hotels for readers of the pricey monthly ($100 a year; Box 300, Whitefish, Mont. 59937). Here is a sampling of press release/brochure hype and what was actually discovered at some hideaways that were not recommended:
“Exciting environs” (a mugger’s paradise)
“Heart of Old City” (near slums)
“Natural setting” (lots of weeds)
“Historic” (dilapidated)
“Old World charm” (never renovated)
“Chic” (Robin Leach slept there)
“Evening turn-down” (a lost reservation)
“Express check-out” (we’ll overbill you later)
“Evokes another era” (shared bath)
“Exercise facilities” (no elevator)
