Gov. Edgar and columnist Bob Greene made political hay and great news stories with the coverage of the Baby Richard case. Too bad they feel the need to negate the fact that Baby Richard was only 57 days old at the time the father tried to gain custody.
The father is said to be a fit parent, who has been trying to gain custody of his child from the time he learned that this child existed. The people who should be bashed are the adoptive parents who have fought this case and now say they should keep the child just because the child is now three.
The child should be the main concern in all adoption cases, but people should not win custody just because they have managed to fight for such a long time and then use the age of the child as justification.
