Deere & Co. of Moline, Ill., has quietly begun negotiations for a new labor contract with the United Auto Workers. The talks are aimed at replacing a three-year pact that expires Sept. 30 and affects 11,080 union workers in six states. The quiet start of the talks contrasts with the attention surrounding the union and its three-year contract battle with Caterpillar Inc. of Peoria. Caterpillar’s refusal to accept a contract patterned after the UAW’s 1991 contract with Deere is at the base of that bitter labor dispute.
