Daniel Rothenberg’s article, “Heeding a grotesque morality tale from Latin America” (Op-Ed, July 8), comments on a small Guatemalan town’s frenzy at the rumor that groups of foreigners “abduct small children, murder them and then extract their internal organs for use in transplant operations.” Rothenberg states “that tales of organ-stealing foreigners represent a cultural phenomenon expressive of the brutal social conditions of contemporary Latin America.”
I would like to suggest a more realistic source of such rumors much closer to home and based on brutal fact, not fantasy. I refer to fetal tissue research, which the Clinton administration has promoted from its first days in office. Imagine suctioning brain matter out of living unborn children. Is this not closely akin to murdering small children and extracting their internal organs?
