Ameritech’s second quarter was the strongest in the company’s history, as earnings rose 14.6 percent, to $446 million, or 81 cents a share, from $389 million, or 72 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenues rose 6.6 percent, to $3.15 billion from $2.95 billion.

The Chicago-based Bell operating company that provides local phone service in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, said growth was fueled by increasing use of its network, with access minutes up 7.9 percent from a year earlier. Cellular phone customers increased nearly 50 percent, to 1.039 million. Ground-based access lines in service grew 2.5 million, to 17.9 million.
