A central atrium, roof-top deck and large balcony off the kitchen add up to a light and open feeling at this a four-story condominium in Hudson Mews, a 6-year-old complex just off North Avenue in Old Town.
Its decor, which includes bleached oak floors, walls painted white or extremely light gray, and touches of whimsical wallpaper, contribute to the expansive nature of this vertical space.
This unit, Apt. 2 at 1616 N. Hudson Ave., is available for sale for $399,900, reduced from $412,500 by “motivated owners,” says real estate agent Neil Kilgallon of Coldwell Banker Stanmeyer. Hudson Mews, an attractive red brick building with green tile accents, has landscaped terraces connecting its 22 units.
Offering 2,700 square feet, the apartment has a simple layout: living room/dining room combination and kitchen on the first floor; master bedroom, master bath and den on the second floor; three bedrooms and full bath on the third floor; and penthouse-level den and deck on the fourth floor.
Raised hearth
A glass block divider provides the feeling of a small entryway just inside the front door. Visitors enter directly into the living room/dining room combination, which is painted white and measures 19 by 25 feet. It features a black marble, raised fireplace and a central atrium that stretches to the top of the fourth story.
Off the hall between the dining area and the kitchen is a half bath, which is decorated with dark-gray textured wallpaper. There is also a hall closet and a storage closet under the stairs.
The cook’s kitchen seems bigger than its dimensions, 9 by 13 feet. It has loads of white cabinets topped by an L-shaped marble counter. Appliances include a double stove, separate gas cooktop, microwave oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and trash compactor. In addition, there is plenty of room for a large table.
The kitchen’s playful wallpaper features black geometric designs dancing against a white background. Two semi-circular windows near the ceiling add additional light and interest to the room’s design.
Through double glass sliding doors is a good-sized deck, which faces the front of the building. Its brick enclosure is high enough to lend privacy but not so high as to give it a confining feeling.
Up gray carpeted steps is the second story, which houses the master bedroom and bath and an open den area. The 14-by-17 master bedroom is painted light gray and carpeted in gray. It features a ceiling fan and two wall-length rows of closets behind mirrored doors.
The master bath has a whirlpool tub, bordered on two sides by glass block and on a third by a wall of mirrors. Atrium light enters the room through two slanted, smoked-glass windows. A separate shower, double sink, recessed lighting and telephone over the toilet make this bathroom extremely well-equipped. There’s storage space in cabinets under the sink and in a linen closet. Light-gray ceramic tile lines the floor and area around the tub.
A walkway leads from the master bedroom to an open sitting area, where sliding glass doors to a Juliet-size balcony. The sitting area includes two built-in closets with enough space between them for an entertainment center. This is also where you’ll find the washer and dryer, furnace and hot water heater, all neatly tucked behind folding closet doors.
Three bedrooms on the third floor range in size from 9 by 12 feet to 12 by 17. The largest bedroom has a door to the bathroom and one to the hall. It also has a door leading outside to a spiral iron staircase. The bedrooms all have ample closets and two have ceiling fans. They also have thermal-pane sliding windows.
The third-floor full bath includes a low tub-perfect for children-and a white ceramic tile floor. Its wallpaper has blue-green and lilac geometric shapes against a white background.
The fourth floor, up yet another gray-carpeted staircase, is composed of one room and a spacious roof-top deck. Designed for entertaining, the room has two sliding glass doors in one corner to allow for maximum ventilation and a row of cabinets, built-in refrigerator and sink.
The price of the unit includes two underground parking spaces, large storage lockers in the parking area, a security/intercom system linked to the front gate of the complex, zoned heating and central air conditioning. Taxes for the unit were $7,600 last year. The monthly assessment fee is $317.
