Who among us has not recently become dismayed with complaints on the evening news by people who seem to blame the government, the schools and big business for whatever ills befall them. Doesn’t it seem that fewer people are willing to take responsibility for their own self-inflicted problems?
Now comes Dr. Philip Lee, assistant secretary of health in the Department of Health and Human Services, who states: “The government is not doing enough to reduce obesity. It is not focused. We don’t have a coherent across-the-board policy. We are in the process of developing one.”
Scary, isn’t it? A high-ranking government official promises to design government policy to help citizens face the ins and outs of weight control. Here is one of the few remaining avenues of life where each of us is responsible for his or her own destiny. Heaven knows there is an abundance of written information on the health consequences of obesity and how to eat healthy to control weight.
Do we really need Uncle Sam’s minions spelling out weight-control policy for us? After all, how are the bureaucrats going to convey their policy if not in writing? If I choose to ignore all of the current written material on weight control, I’m certainly not going to pay heed to written government policy on the same subject. Give us and our tax dollars a break!
