IBM will close Ambra Computer Corp., a 2-year-old subsidiary formed to make inexpensive personal computers to be sold directly to customers. The move is one of several cost-cutting actions to be announced Friday in IBM’s personal computer division, which will eliminate 1,500 to 2,000 jobs, or nearly 20 percent of its work force. The unit was conceived as IBM’s answer to low-priced competitors.
