John E. “Doc” McCarthy, 50, assistant director of security at McCormick Place, died Wednesday at his home in Canaryville. Born in Chicago, Mr. McCarthy was a Chicago police officer in 1969. He then became chief of court services for the Cook County Sheriff’s Department from 1970 to 1986. Mr. McCarthy was an investigator for the Cook County state’s attorney from 1986 to 1991, when he began working at McCormick Place. Mr. McCarthy is survived by three sons, Timothy, Patrick and Michael; two daughters, Colleen and Barbara; his mother, Rose; three brothers, and a sister. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday in McInerny Funeral Home, 4635 S. Wallace St. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Gabriel’s Church, 45th Street and Lowe Avenue.
