When does the vote of 18 or 23 Lake County Board members not constitute the will of the people of Lake County? When the banana republic of Mettawa decides that it alone knows what is best for the county.
Eighteen of our county board members voted to bring much-needed jobs to Lake County by approving Grainger’s rezoning request. Grainger would like to build its corporate office on 155 acres at the intersection of Illinois Highway 50 and the Tri-State. At the same time, Grainger will give 256 acres to the Forest Preserve District, thereby removing that land from any future development in perpetuity.
Mettawa, a community of less than 200 dwellings, voted to challenge the county board vote in court. “The village has the ability to keep Grainger running in circles for years, which we fully intend to do,” said Jere Zenko, village trustee. Well, so much for the democratic process.
