The cancellation of Argonne’s Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) will have a greater impact than what the average person may think. When the depletion of fossil fuels grabs our attention next century, we and our children could then scratch our heads and attempt to figure out the reasoning behind the decision.

As a graduate student in nuclear engineering, it pains me to see people like Anita Aurilo, the anti-nuclear spokeswoman, glad that the IFR was cancelled. I need a better fundamental reason for the cancellation other than her naming it a “bad idea.”
