William Schertler, 66, a teacher and an official with the Chicago Public Schools system since 1953, died Sunday at a tennis court in Park Ridge. Mr. Schertler was a longtime resident of Edison Park. He was the principal of Von Steuben High School in Lincoln Park from 1975 until his retirement in 1988. He was a former assistant area officer. He participated in Chicago’s Golden Gloves boxing tournaments as a young man. Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons, David, Thomas and Gregory; a daughter, Susan Miller; and a grandson. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, 120 S. Northwest Highway in Park Ridge. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Juliana Catholic Church, 7400 W. Touhy Ave., Chicago.
