Coach: Lou Tepper.
Record at school: 11-12-1 (.523), 9-6-1 (.600) Big 10, two years.
1993 record: 5-6 (.455), 5-3 (.625) Big 10, tie fourth place.
Returning starters: 18: offense 7, defense 11.
Players to watch: QB Johnny Johnson, LB Dana Howard, LB John Holecek, LB Simeon Rice, RB Ty Douthard.
Top newcomers: RB Robert Holcombe, LT Chris Brown.
Outlook: The offense is expected to be more settled in Greg Landry’s second year as offensive coordinator. Much more will be anticipated, as well, from quarterback Johnny Johnson now that he has established himself as the field leader. Consistency is his goal. The defense returns all its starters and anything less than the top ranking in the Big 10 will be a disappointment. One of several teams that will compete for the title, Illinois needs to distinguish itself by forming its own identity and marching to the top echelon.
