I have been a fan of the Chicago Cubs for more than 50 years and a one-half season ticket holder for four seats for the past eight or nine years. I won’t be renewing my seats next year and I hope that many others will join me.
We all pay our money expecting some value for it, and for many, many years we have been cheated both by the Cubs and by major league baseball in general. The only interest the players and the owners have is in money, not in presenting high-class entertainment.
They clearly demonstrate that they don’t care a whit for the fans who pay the bill by allowing a strike just at the time the season was starting to get interesting.
Locally, I have even more of an issue. The players in Chicago (Cubs players) care even less for the fans. They have no pride in themselves or their product. They don’t give us decent entertainment, primarily because they know we will be back-no matter what-paying their fat paychecks.
The Tribune Co. also cares little for the fans. It has non-baseball people whose very limited understanding of the game allows players like Greg Maddux to leave because they understand only bottom lines and are not willing to give the fans the kind of a product we deserve. They hire incompetent general managers and managers, and then feed us excuses. Well, I’m tired of being a sucker and I hope many other paying fans are too.
