Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I’m one of the lucky few who has the chance each year to hear and see baseball from my own front window. Yes, I’m one who actually welcomes the noise and extra congestion on the streets each spring. Why not? A new set of heroes has arrived at the park.

But now the boys have packed up their bats, headed home for the summer. The last strike’s been called. The final out’s been made. Gone is the roar of the crowd and the crack of the bat. The night air offers no more than the wail of distant sirens and an occasional cricket’s chirp.

Am I surprised? Not a bit. You see, it happens every summer. But for all those Little League players who again filled my summer evenings with joy, I say thank you for hanging in there. Baseball hopes you’ll be back next year. Though you’re still quite young, the sport surely needs players like you.

You were the heroes who didn’t let your fans down.
