I’m sure that most of the current crop of political experts are not old enough to remember 1948. President Harry Truman was a sure loser and on election morning the Tribune exultantly proclaimed that Thomas E. Dewey was elected.

Some of the current generation of pundits have the next Senate in control of the Republicans and the Democrat majority in the House greatly narrowed, if not gone.

I hope the Tribune’s national news desk chief has not already ordered the Nov. 9 Page-One banner headline proclaiming, “Republican sweep.”

Harry Truman could not win in 1948 and in 1994 the Democrats will be trounced. Don’t bet the family fortune on it.
