Members of the National Pork Producers Council are squealing about their bread and butter getting a bad name, and who can blame them?

During the overheated debate on the crime bill, opponents frequently complained that the legislation was laden with pork-as if most senators have never bragged about their ability to bring home the bacon. The low point had to be when Republican Alfonse D’Amato of New York took the floor in the Senate to give his stirring rendition of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.”

That straw must have broken the pig’s back. Robin Kline, director of the Pork Information Bureau, says Congress should be as effective as the pork industry in trimming fat, adding: “We don’t appreciate Congress using pork as a pejorative.”

Her beef is legitimate. Americans should expect their elected officials to talk turkey. If they don’t, everyone will know they’re just plain chicken.
