Tom Colgan (Voice, Aug. 21) feels that the voters in this state were cheated when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled against the term limits referendum. This was a ruling that really made sense.

If, as Mr. Colgan asserts, the voters are fed up with the “entrenched political incumbents,” the next election will provide them with a way to do something about it. If the voters are sufficiently unhappy with the work of the people who represent them they can, by voting, turn them out. Failure to vote an officeholder out must mean that his or her constituents are satisfied.

Citizens dissatisfied with the work of the state legislature should stop thinking of it as some kind of monolithic entity. They should focus their attention on whatever individual represents their district and learn something about the person’s record. They should get to know what the representative has done for the district, and for the state generally. They at least should learn the man’s or the woman’s name.
