Carson Hamill Varner, 73, a former executive at Quaker Oats Co., died in Evanston Hospital on Friday. Mr. Varner was an executive with Quaker Oats in Chicago from 1946 until 1986. He was also a director and vice president of the Commodity Club of Chicago, and a member of the board of directors of the Board of Trade from 1959 to 1966. He was an adviser to former Sens. Robert Taft and Everett M. Dirksen. Mr. Varner served as director of the Grain Exchange Institute in Chicago, director of the National Grain and Feed Dealers Association in Washington, D.C., director of the Edgar County Farm Bureau and chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by two sons, professor Carson Jr. and Van der Veer; a brother; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Winnetka Congregational Church, 725 Pine St.
