In your Sept. 1 coverage of the Northern Ireland cease-fire declaration, the pie chart illustrating religious affiliation gave figures that were seriously outdated: 28 percent Catholic and 72 percent non-Catholic. This is unfortunate in regard to a country where demographics are particularly important.
In response to the voluntary question on religion in the 1991 Census of Population, 89 percent of the total population recorded a religious affiliation.
Of those who recorded a religious affiliation, 43 percent were Catholic and 57 percent non-Catholic. The economically active population is around 40 percent Catholic and 60 percent non-Catholic.
