As the wife of a Cuban-American citizen, it has been my privilege to meet many Cuban-Americans who reside here. I have closely followed your coverage of the recent exodus of refugees from Cuba and noted one recurring misconception that was again present in your Aug. 30 editorial.

As a group, their most fervent emotions are not those of hatred and distrust of Fidel Castro and his government. The feeling that unites them is overwhelming concern about the plight of the Cuban people.

Although they came with nothing, they did as generations of immigrants before them did. They worked hard and took advantage of the opportunities that our country had to offer. These include access to education, opportunities for financial success and the chance to participate freely in the democratic process.

Each day they suffer knowing that their countrymen and -women do not have these rights. This is their greatest desire-to see these rights restored in Cuba.
