When I hear a person state that the 2nd Amendment is outdated and only the “militia,” the army and police should own guns so that citizens will be safe, I wonder if the person knows that the phrase “the right of the people,” as used in the wording of the 2nd Amendment, is used in other amendments as well.

If the “right of the people” doesn’t apply to the keeping and bearing of arms, then to peaceably assemble, to speak freely, to not self-incriminate, to not be subject to unreasonable search and seizure, et al, does not apply to “the people” either. I see the constitutional argument as an all-or-nothing choice, not as one of pick and choose.

Guns are only a problem in this country where they have been banned in the name of safety. Bad guys have guns. To ban guns from honest people senselessly creates more victims of those bad guys.

If a person cares to rely on the police and military to defend house and home, that is his or her choice. But because the government is incapable of guaranteeing protection to every citizen, I feel obligated to take care of and defend my family and myself.
